Cargo agents claim KRA document fake
Article business, Business Daily Kenya:Clearing and forwarding agents yesterday asked Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Commissioner-General John Njiraini to confirm whether a document containing a set of new customs requirements originated from his office.
They claimed the Stakeholders Bio Data form may not be official since it lacks certain special features known to all customs players.
The agents, who met at a Nairobi hotel, accused three members of the board of management of faking the document for selfish gains and demanded that the commissioner general come clean on the matter.
Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (Kifwa) select committee interim chairman William Ojonyi said the main goal of the document is to favour multinational companies at the expense of local small and micro enterprises.
“We have already sensed that the whole process is meant to favour foreign companies who are eyeing the immense financial benefits that will come with the Standard Gauge Railway.
We are asking the commissioner-general to come clean in this matter,” he said. KRA said last week the delay in renewing the licences is as a result of ongoing vetting of clearing and forwarding agents’ applications. It said the process is being undertaken with objectivity and due regard to fairness.
“Given the criticality of clearing and forwarding services in safeguarding national security and public revenue, it is imperative that persons entrusted with this role, exhibit the highest standards of ethical and business conduct,” said Njiraini.
“The ongoing initiative to evaluate applicant suitability is meant to achieve this objective prior to the renewal of licences,” he added. But yesterday, directors of cargo clearing companies demanded renewal of their customs operating licences within seven working days, failure to which they will paralyse the sector.
“As we conclude today’s meeting, let’s agree unanimously that we are disowning the document,” said Ojonyi.
