When every day is a fight for survival against walkers, Saviors and tetanus (that bandage on Rick's hand looks mighty grubby), you've got to take your joy where you can get it, which was exactly what Richonne did in "Say Yes" — taking what constitutes a vacation in the world of TWD, by spending their days bantering and their nights bonking out in the wild together, revelling in each other in a way that we rarely get to see. It's refreshing to witness our heroes laughing and teasing each other, especially in a show as unrelentingly bleak as The Walking Dead has become this season. But the episode also did an impressive job of cutting those moments of humor with an undercurrent of tension — a credit to director Greg Nicotero, who has always managed to navigate the show's frequent shifts in tone with a deft eye and a playful touch.  We've been trained to anticipate the worst when our heroes fall through a roof into a mysterious building or get trapped in a tight space surrounded by walkers. But thanks to Nicotero's direction and Matt Negrete's creative script, the episode subverts our expectations at every turn. Rick and Michonne fall to their apparent doom and land on a pile of perfectly preserved food instead, and later pop out of a swarmed car and simply hop over a fence to avoid the zombies surrounding them. The only downside to this cheeky tone is that a lot of these scenarios (probably purposefully) mirror situations that Glenn found himself in, especially when Michonne sees Rick fall under a crowd of zombies who waste no time in tearing him apart, before our hero miraculously pops out of a hiding spot completely unscathed.  Sadly, after Glenn's dumpster dive fake-out, the show has lost all its credibility when it comes to putting our heroes in peril. These days, I treat The Walking Dead like the boy who cried wolf. Any time one of our main characters gets themselves into a sticky situation from which there appears to be no escape, the audience is conditioned to be skeptical, knowing that there's probably some sleight of hand that will prove it was all a "gotcha" moment.  In cases like this, where the point of the scene was less about tricking the viewers and more about forcing Michonne to reckon with the possibility of losing Rick, it's forgivable. But in a post-Glenn world, it still leaves a bitter aftertaste. On the whole, though, "Say Yes" worked because it balanced those moments of high tension with the quieter character beats designed to satisfy longtime viewers. Rick confided in Michonne that he hasn't been sleeping since Glenn and Abraham were killed and the couple had an honest conversation about what's next — facing their future with a clarity of purpose they've been trying to avoid.  It's nice to take a break from reality for a few days, even if that break involves killing a horde of zombies at a creepy fairground. But eventually the real world creeps back in, and it was heartening to see Rick convincing Michonne that if he dies in the fight, she's the right person to lead the survivors into the light, just as she's been leading him.   Tara, too, had to face reality after the Scavengers decided that sixty-odd guns weren't sufficient for their war with Negan. She's been keeping the existence of Oceanside a secret since she got back to Alexandria — as she promised to do — but with the pressure mounting, it looks as if she's ready to put her conscience aside if it means getting the weapons they need.  It's an impossible moral dilemma. As she asks Judith (poor kid), why do the Alexandrians' desires mean more than the residents of Oceanside, when that Amazonian community has already lost all of its husbands, sons and brothers? But with time running out and the Saviors gaining strength and supplies every day, they don't have the luxury of the moral high ground.  Rosita and Sasha, on the other hand, are quite happy taking the low road. They've now joined forces to take out Negan with a sniper rifle and they're apparently both content for it to be a suicide mission.  Why do I get the feeling that Eugene will somehow have a hand in messing up their sneaky scheme? Oh yeah, because he messes up everything. The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
