The explosive debate on biotechnology yesterday resurfaced after legislators drawn from a parliamentary watchdog opposed the lifting of a ban on importation of Genetically Modified (GM) products.

A section of the National Assembly’s Committee on Agriculture led by chairman Mohamed Noor cut short National Biosafety Authority chief executive Dr Will Tonui during a forum at a Nairobi hotel.

Tonui was outlining steps the body has put in place to assure Kenyans about the benefits of GM products. Uriri MP John Kobado rose to support the technology while Kiambu Town MP Jude Jomo excused himself from the debate, saying he was “ignorant” of the science, before leaving the meeting.

However, John Serut (Mt Elgon), Dan Maanzo (Makueni), Mary Wambui (Othaya) Benjamin Washiali (Mumias East) backed the chair of the committee who had challenged local researchers to develop a homegrown science as they accused NBA of lacking capacity for surveillance.

They said though no GM product had been approved in Kenya, the food had found a way into supermarket shelves while a global seed production giant had been allowed to advertise seeds on a local media station. “Let’s not borrow technology from elsewhere.

Let’s come up with a homegrown solution to the food safety crisis in the country; not implement a technology developed elsewhere,” said Noor.

He insisted the ban can only be lifted once researchers assure Kenyans about their safety and that of the environment.
