Article men's tights, Article merino tights, Article opaque tights, Article TheTightSpot.com, Article tights for men, Article Wolford, We covered the recent launch at thetightspot.com of their new category of men's tights - a carefully chosen selection of tights from brands and styles in stock that are suitable for men.As part of the launch we also interviewed Sophie and Sarah of the thetightspot.com as part of the launch of their recommended tights for men.
thetightspot.com kindly sent us a pair of the Wolford Merino Tights to trial and review.
Packaging
Wolford have really gone the extra mile to make the whole packaging and presentation of this style something different.
The tights are packaged in an elegant box, with a lid that slides open to reveal the tights sitting in a tray.
The tights are folded around card and then wrapped in special Wolford tissue paper. It really feels quite special opening them.
Material and features
First impressions are very positive indeed. The yarn feels wonderfully soft and warm. The legs are also very long - a great sign for male wearers.
The tights are made from 49% Virgin Wool, 49% Nylon and 2% Elastane.
The low Elastane content is quite surprising. But wait, this is what Wolford say:
"Elastane is not needed on the leg, because wool has a high natural stretch of its own."
Elastane is used in the 3cm wide knitted waistband, which also has the usual Wolford label seen into the inside seam.
As mentioned above the legs have excellent length and are tapered - the thighs have more room and this narrows towards the calf and ankles.
Closer inspection reveals the real touches of quality: the toe, heel and sole are all reinforced to provide durability and longer wear. The reinforcement on the sole is barely visible so well is it engineered.
The brief is, as in all Wolford styles, nice and roomy and will stretch easily over the waist and hips.
Seams are flat and there is a wool gusset. Extra Large Wolford tights do not have a rear comfort panel.
Fit and sizing
The Wolford Merino Tights are available in four sizes at thetightspot.com:
- Small
- Medium
- Large
- XL
These tights feel just amazingly soft and comfortable on the skin. They provide warmth but the skin is also able to breathe. If your legs sweat at all, you will find that the wool in the yarn absorbs this and also allows for evaporation.
The sizing in the XL size is really quite generous in the leg as well as the brief.
The fit was excellent and the Merino Tights were just so comfortable to wear.
Colour range
The Wolford Merino Tights are available from thetightspot.com in Black and Cream colours.
I tested the Black colour.
Price and availability
The Wolford Merino Tights are priced at £38.95.
Conclusion
Are these the best wool tights you can buy? I can't see anything else that can touch the Wolford Merino Tights for quality, detail and comfort.
I can see that Falke, Fogal, Kunert and Trasparenze all make some very nice wool tights; some with cotton and some with cashmere.
But it's hard to see how the Wolford Merino Tights can be bettered.
If you want a touch of absolute luxury then go for these. I can't wait for the cooler autumn weather to arrive so I can wear them regularly.
Thanks to thetightspot.com for the sample and for their support for the Hosiery For Men blog.
